I am intending to lay some decking on an area of sound concrete outside my back door and french doors. I do not have a great deal of depth to play with - about 7cm clearance. All the base/frame timber I have seen at places like B&Q would take me above this level. The question is - would I be OK making my frame from 2x1 inch roofing battens firmly screwed and plugged into the concrete?

as long as the battens are securley fixed then it should work ok. I would be inclined to use normal 2 x 1 rather than roofing battens as they are not always the most evenly cut. Which way are you placing them down ie 25mm or 50mm face to the ground? The other factor is you wont have a lot to fix the decking into. If its the only option youve got then youve got to go with it!

The objective is to minimise the overall height, so I'd be laying them with the the 50mm edge to the ground giving me a height of 25mm. I suppose I could use a wider timber, say 3X1 to give me more leeway when fixing the decking.
One further question - what should I treat this timber with to prevent rotting, or should I be looking at tanalised stuff anyway?

use treated anyway. if you can get away with using 50 x 50 id use that as a minimum.
