If I wanted to build the back skin of part of my retaining wall out of house bricks, could I? Would they be strong enough?

(I have LOADS left).

dependent on the size and what its holding back, yes you can, but youd do it as a single brick wall rather than in skins. depenedent on the height etc, the lower part would be 3 bricks wide, the middle two bricks wide and the top 1 brick wide, if that makes sense
 
It would be ideal if they were engineering grade bricks. Unfortunately your bricks will probably break down in time. (but probably not in our lifetime).
