Several thousand now line up on the other side of the Channel determined to get to the UK. What happens when there are tens of thousands? What happens if they start setting off in boats and rafts by the thousand? It's not a long way and if they are prepared to risk the hundred miles or so across the Med it won't be long before they set off across the Channel.
And I'm not talking about general immigration. I've said before I've got no real issue with it. As far as I'm concerned people come, people go and the World keeps turning. But, to repeat myself, this is not normal and has the potential to change this Country beyond recognition.
Exactly my point. We have had immigration from foreign parts for many years. I remember in my childhood West Indians arriving and, shortly afterwards, Pakistanis. In those days, they came because we asked them to.
I believe the rot set in after we joined the EU. (Of course, we never did. We joined the EEC; the EU was foist upon us by politicians.) Despite warnings, the flood gates opened and many came - quite legally, as it happened. Some of the East Europeans are, I'm sure, hard working people.
I believe the real problem is more recent: the hoards who cross the Med. and, once in Italy, find no barriers to travelling to Calais. We all know why Calais, of course. From what I've seen and heard, they bring nothing of any value to the well-being of this country. Of course, the root cause is, again, the EU: free passage across the continent.
If the Germans want to take them in, good luck to them. The Frogs have no reason to stop them coming in from Italy as they know they are not stopping, at least not for any length of time. At least our border control people are making a half-hearted attempt to stop them entering our country, with little or no help from the French I might add.
The annoying thing is that with a stroke of the pen, Wimpy Dave could call a halt by denying them handouts, housing, free healthcare, etc., but I shall not hold my breath.
