Seems a perfectly reasonable question to ask. It helps us get a bit more backgroung into what the op is planning to do, so whe can advise accordingly, wether this be telling how to do what he wants, or as this thread hs gone, pointing out the op is well out of his depth.

What it the problem with someone doing DIY electrics when they are competant to do so?

Especially if you have joined a forum for DIY enthusiasts where the original objective was to share information and learn from those more experienced and knowledgable ?

I suspect I too have patronised others in the past and may have forgotten the intended spirit of this forum. I have not been on the site for a while but having logged on tonight it struck me that far too many posts are answered far too smugly by those with their own egos to boost, and there's so much sucking up to the high post counters that i'm not sure whether it makes me laugh or puke !

Maybe its just me and if so i'll shut up !

This isn't some points scoring excercise.

I have never met, and I don't actually know anyone on this site, and have no reason to want to get one up on them, but conversally, I am not going to sit here and give advice to people who are not fit to change a plugtop, never mind try and move a consumer unit.

Perhaps we could be a bit more diplomatic.

Sometimes I'm actually quite helpful. Sometimes I'm tired and grumpy and not so helpful. I'm sure if anything untoward or nasty were posted the mods would remove it and tell me off anyway.

Has no one ever poked fun at you in the real world just for the sake of it?

Can you explain what's sanctimonious or obnoxious about that? Being in a situation where existing cables won't reach a CU could easily have meant (as it appears it did) that the OP was replacing, or moving, a CU, and there are all sorts of ramifications to that.

So it seemed reasonable to ask why he needed to know.

None of the information you need is restricted, it's just that you'll have to go about getting it in a structured manner which ensures that you also get all the other information you need which you may not even realise you don't know.

It's perfectly true that what he needs to know is not restricted, and it's also perfectly true that learning enough to move or replace CUs should be done properly, and that the job should not be tackled on the basis of just asking questions here that happen to occur to him.

Or do you disagree about that?

Replacing a CU is a very non-trivial task, and to do it properly requires knowledge and skills which you do not possess and which you cannot adequately acquire just by asking the odd questions which happen to occur to you.

That list of books has been there for over 4 years, and I've updated it 16 times - is there something wrong with it?
