Bathroom Downlights and Fan

Small point of detail - but there is no Zone 3 anymore! There are three zones but they are Zone 0, Zone 1 & Zone 2.

The law still refers to the 16th edition of the regs in the description of a special location hence even though it is not referred to in the 17th edition regs, any work in zone 3 (16th ed'n regs) is notifiable, even if working to the 17th edition.
Confused?

“special location” means a location within the limits of the relevant zones specified for a bath, a shower, a swimming or paddling pool or a hot air sauna in the Wiring Regulations, sixteenth edition, published by the Institution of Electrical Engineers and the British Standards Institution as BS 7671: 2001 and incorporating amendments 1 and 2.

I wonder where you would be legally if you chose to ignore the requirement to seek guidance from an outdated British Standard and chose to adopt the zoning arrangements from a current British Standard?

Legally I'd imagine you would have a struggle as the law is pretty clear where you need to go for the information regarding notifiable work - the out of date one!
For the actual installation - that can be done to the 17th edition zoning as long as work which falls into the relevent zones under the 16th edition is notified.

Yes, I meant installation to BS7671:2008 but notify only if work is within the zones set out by BS7671:2008 and not an outdated BS.

The best of both worlds for them eh?

I don't like the way they just used a non-statutory document to shortcut writing the law properly if you know what I mean. They need to update the law but that takes a building regulation ammendment via yet another statutory instrument to implement it.

Is it worth asking then, what defines the limits of a bathroom, or zones in a bathroom. Is it the inside surface of the walls? In that case then, as downlighters and fans ( at least the electrical parts of them), and also ALL wiring is outside the bathroom... is there a need to notify?
