OK, it worked beautifully until the oil ran out - then made massive amounts of soot. The guy (I was away from home) who worked on it said that the "shutter" was broken. Is that the flap in the intake pipe?

Thanks!

This was what you appeared to be asking about in the other thread, but that was a B9 burner, which is why hijacking causes confusion.

It's a plate, adjusted by a coarse threaded plastic screw. The plate travels up and down as the screw rotates, and covers a shaped slot. Either of the threaded bits wear out, and then the whole shutter box has to be replaced.

On the Sterling 50 the mechanism is different and more reliable. The sooting can be caused commonly by blocked oil filters. These get blocked when the tank runs out, and the next fill stirs up all the krappe.

Thanks oilman. Ours is a Sterling 50. On the exploded diagram of the burner there's a flat plat with a pin through it. It's not identified on the short parts list - am I right in thinking this is the shutter?

Brilliant - thanks oilman, I now see how this damper works, sliding as you said. Is the screw which moves it plastic?

The "Heating Engineer" who charged us £120 and left the boiler stuffed full of soot and not working said that it was plastic and that we needed a new one.

The story is that we ran out of oil - I'm working away from home in the week so called the guy in. Quite what he did I'm not sure as wife not brilliant technically, why should she be. I've no idea whether he cleaned the filters, and as it's a "fake" two pipe system (with tiger loop) whether he pumped/sucked oil up the supply line to prime.

I will clean all soot out tomorrow including sweeping the flue (balanced vertical) then remove burner again and check for damage - any hints most gratefully received!

I should learn to read - you clearly stated that the screw was plastic in your earlier post, sorry :(

That bloke was no engineer, or even technician. If he is oftec registered, report him, but don't mention money, Oftec aren't interested in that.

For £120 he could have cleaned it out at least, and maybe even have got it running, though it depends how long it took. He could have done a temporary fix by gluing the shutter in place with some silicone sealer and perhaps a bit of gaffer tape.

If you clean it, use an old vacuum cleaner which doesn't get used indoors, and disposable bags, it will stink for weeks afterwards. Use lots of disposable gloves too, work slowly and methodically. A tiny amount of soot makes a hell of a mess if spread about.

For temporary use, have the shutter open and close it gradually until you can get it to ignite. Close it a little bit more and let it run for half an hour to burn off the residue, then close it a bit more until you get a smoky flame, then open it until the smoke stops. Stick it in place, and get someone in who's qualified and competent to set it up. Ask your neighbours for recommendations.

as oilman said he is no engineer he could have fixed the slide using a self tapping screw while a new one is ordered.

ask a friend/family or nock next door ask who they use recommendation is better than yellow pages

as for cleaning its a messy job

Eee lad, that a much better idea than silicone sealer :D

brittleware, you can probably get your money back too. Look here. He should have given you WRITTEN notice, and failing to do so is a criminal offence, so a bit of cooperation on his part might save Trading Standards getting to know (or it might not ).

what do you do with the carp hydraulic rams ?
do you replace or replace o rings ?

I now plug the hole of i don't have plug squash the pipe flat and solder
the damn things always leak or am i unlucky

As I said to brittleware, start a nice new thread, hijacking causes confusion.

Actually, when the guy left his advice was that I should get a new burner as spares can't be bought for our Sterling 50....... I think my wife should stop the cheque she gave him.

Incompetent, liar and criminal,. What's his address? On second thoughts, please tell trading standards, esp regarding Doorstep Selling Regs, as you are probably not the only ones he's charged for not doing a job.
