Takes over 90 seconds to get hot water!

Hello all
I was just interested , how it is our combi boiler , takes longer to heat water when the heating is off as opposed to when its on ?

I understand that it may come through quicker when the heatings on but why ? , shouldnt it be a lot quicker than 90 seconds ?!

Also are there not some combi boilers where the heating and hot water functions are seperate so the heating being on shouldnt be an issue ?

But as you have not told us the model then I cannot guess what that might be!

as tony rightly points out a make/model is helpful!!

sounds like a divertor valve or thermistor but as my crystal ball is broken at the moment I can't see into your boiler

I will post the make and model when i get home....i was just as interested to know , is it accepted that combi boilers will give hot water quicker when the heatings on ?

I really dont know why you are harping on with that question.

Your boiler has a fault!

In practice a boiler will deliver hot water a LITTLE quicker when the heating is on because the inside is already hot.

Most combis will give pretty hot water within 6-10 seconds but the exact time does depend on the model which we dont know yet.

Yes, but NOT to the extent of 90 seconds.

HW when the heating is on will usually be quicker and hotter than required for the first few seconds, then it will cool off, then come back up to the pre-set temperature.

In summer it can take approx 20 secs longer to receive HW.

Different boiler models work in different ways.

Some will give almost instant hot water and others will take longer.

Most will be a little quicker when the hot water is on but some with a pilot light will show little difference. It all depends on the individual design.

Regardless, yours has a fault, although you dont seem to want to accept that!

Believe me mate i WANT it to have a fault , because i dont think its acceptable to wait so long for hot water !


I was also just interested in the hetaing off/slower hot water question thats all !

The tap is roughly 3 meters i would say , goes along the outside wall from the bathroom , and into the kitchen.

We didnt live there when installed , it seems quite an old boiler though ! , and it definatly takes much longer this year than last summer

For those interested still , sorry its taken so long

Its a Halstead `the finest` Wickes 90

Good or bad ?!

Also , timed it this morning , to run hot from the kitchen tap took nearly 5 minutes (with the heating off)

Heat exchanger caked in crap ?!

Does the boiler fire up immediately the hot tap is turned on?

Are you running 9 litres per minute flow rate from the tap on this test?

Its not a very good boiler and is made by Halstead.

But it should still give pretty hot water in about 20 seconds!

No the boiler doesnt fire up straight away , i am sure it used to mind you , and i think the gas engineer we spoke to a while ago said its output was 10 litres per minute...?


So 5 minutes is definatly too long , with the heating off , then lol

9 li/min is about all it can heat up to be almost too hot to keep your hand in !

The boiler should fire up within 1-3 seconds and water be fairly hot in 10-20 seconds.
