single red with no earth linked from my light switch in the lounge and into my hall way light switch (so its powering the H/S/L lights)

There are 3 other wires in the switch (twin red with earth that goes to landing light) and another single red with earth that goes to light fitting in hall.

Now on the landing light swith i have another single red with no earth that comes out the common on the switch and to the landing light.

My question is, will this pass regs when i get the place tested? I was under the impression that all wires needed to carry an earth? I have phoned a sparky and he says it will because the boxes it is in are earthed?

Is this correct ?

I have checked to see if they have stolen a neutral from another circuit but it all does go dead on the dowstairs lighting breaker

Thanks.

nothing wrong with single reds with no earth..

as long as you have a proper earth at the switches and lights that all connect back to the CU then it's all good..

not entirely sure that you will have though..
if the twin red with earth only goes between the 2 switches that the single reds with no earth goes to, then there's no earth there..

It may go dead with the downstairs breaker, if there is a shared neutral from the upstairs circuit you wont know until come to do some work on it and you separate out the neutrals, then one becomes live to 240v - OUCH!! (Been there - done that - got the T-Shirt :( )

I'm waiting for the comments on the screwdriver, it looks like a neon one :D

how can i check the earth? all the rest of the lights wiring is new (3 years) and the H/S/L was ment to be done at the same time but i was supprissed to find this when i was changing the light sockets the other day. i have traced a new wire that is going into the loft red/black and earth that goes into the landing light fitting and then disapears under the floor to i guess the downstairs circuit. The red is not being used but put into a connector block.

Just a thought, if i connect a socket upto where the light fitting is can i plug a tester into it to test for neutral/live and earth and turn all other circuits off to see if it is correct? I have one of them testers with the 3 lights on the front that tell you if there is a earth etc?

All the other light fittings look like this

And all other light switches have twin red and earth at them, nothing else.

yes it is! It just happens to be the one i picked up to un-screw the plates!

I have read before that there not safe for testing etc
