VERY SLOW PC START UP

We have an old Dell Optiplex running Win2K at work, which is used for nothing else other than running eMU (terminal emulator) and occasionally we plug a digital camera into it and email pictures across departments.

Sometimes we wait 5-10 mins for a program to start up. Mind you, it does only have 128MB RAM! The anti-virus gobbles most of that up...

So, simply put, you need more RAM. Another thing: how much hard-drive space do you have left? If you're short on RAM and short on disk space then that's double trouble. As stated earlier, when your system runs out of RAM it uses the hard-drive as RAM (virtual memory). If you've got lots of space left on your hard-drive, you could increase the size of your virtual memory. I generally advise people to let Windows manage that, but you could try it and see if it helps temporarily.

Oh man this threads so painful! Nicetoseeyoutoseeyounice, just add some more RAM, you've been messing around with this for about 2 months yet you ignore the 4 or so recomendations to increase the RAM. Why are you so reluctant to do this? My brand new Dell laptop (256mb) ran like a dog from the day it was delivered, £20 later with 1GB of RAM and it flies.
If you still have problems after that register here: http://www.techsupportforum.com/ these people live and breath this kind of stuff, if you follow their instructions they'll probably eventually ask you to post your logs, they'll anaylise them and tell you what should be there and what shouldn't.

I shall just ignore Mr Mercrude SORRY, Mercury, he is very rude. What planet is he on.
Firstly, no one twists your arm. IF MY POST IS SO BORING THEN DONT READ IT, SIMPLE.
Secondly, if Mr Mercury had read my previous posts as regards a message I was receiving then he would realise this was not about RAM.
I have carefully followed what other kind folk on this site have told me to do and slowly but surely my PC is starting to work a bit faster.
I'm not going through it all again Mr Mercury, just read the posts correctly. Why should I have to increase the RAM. I have loads of space on this thing, there is hardly anything on it.

You have just highlighted your problem, you do not have a clue what RAM is.

Well you've ignored the previous 5 who told you to get more RAM so one more won't make any difference!

The reason that it starts to run slow after a while is probably because it is overheating due to lack of RAM and it being over used. What operating system are you using, because XP requires at least 512MB of RAM to work properly and that is according to the Windows team.

More RAM will make a big difference.

If you only have "248mb" of RAM then you do NOT have "lots" of memory left.
Windows XP needs more than that to run efficiently, what is happening is that the memory is filling quickkly and it is swapping out from RAM to the hard drive cache (temporary memory store on the hard drive) as it is doing stuff.
Irrespective of if others are able to run a PC with that little amount of memory, XP is memory hungry and you would be advised to get some more.

Yes... reading a lot of the replies..... Low memory. Celeron processor... No need to reinstall Windows. That is over the top. And memory is cheap so upgrade to 1GB if you can.

So, simply put, you need more RAM.
