Oil running out?

Apart from wave power is there any other way of extracting energy from seawater? after all the sun has been beaming down on the sea for millions of years so it must contain a lot of energy.
A lot (read most) is lost into space.

However, water-source heat pumps can be used by homes close to an expanse of water (private lakes). Dont think they are allowed in the sea or a public lake due to freezing and ecosystem issues.

On any one day the sun provides more energy than is contained in all the oil that the earth has ever contained - but we can't harness it.

In 1918 the world population was 1.8 billion people. Today less than a hundred years later the World population is 6.75 billion people. All consuming more and more oil, driving more cars, eating more food produced from oil. That's the problem - we need to lose at least half of our population.

In my lifetime the World population has more than doubled. (and I've had the snip so don't blame me).

who? and which bit?

The fact is, if we continue relying on money, we will soon have nothing to trade with and therefore the world will descend into looting and theiving.

Don't be daft, of course we're running out of oil fast.

If we had free love, who'd need money?

But we'll always need machines.

So where does the growing latest theory that oil is not a fossil fuel and is constantly being produce as a by product of what happens at the earths core sit in this argument

So, the earth's core is running out. :?

petrol cars can run on ethanol, diesel cars can run on vegetable oil.., synthetic lubricants last longer than organic ones.

as soon as we finish clearcutting the rainforest to get rid of the slow growing trees we can plant the new genetically modified trees and crops to produce the required volumes of veg oil and wood pulp for the cars..

Dex,
Na they could use all that oil that is stored in shales that they dont touch at present to re fuel it

The problem is that the 40 -50 years is being reassessed down to 10 or 20. Maybe even sooner. We are using ever greater amounts of oil - yet production is falling. Should the world recession end - then once again the price of oil will go through the roof and trigger yet another Global economic crash. It's just simple maths.

not too good at reading are we?
it says that we will reach PEAK oil production in 10 years, not run out in 10 years.. it just means after that, some wells will be dry and we'll have to start using the smaller less profitable ones that cost more to get the oil from..

Am sure we could all think of other stuff to sling down there to re-fill it

Anyway, saw something with James May a few weeks ago, which would seem to suggest that petrol could be made from air and sunlight.

Another thing he suggested on top gear was electric cars, which use hydrogen to generate electricity. So the problem is finding a cheap way of manufacturing hydrogen.
