Hi all ,
i am going to tile a bathroom which has floorboards .i am wondering what kind of plywood to use or can i use aqua panel on the floor also and which would be the best.
thanks

Genrallly you would be recommended to use 12mm ply and overboard but over the last few months Ive been using 6mm backerboards and find them quite good.

thanks for the quick reply .is backerboard the same as aqua paneland is it just screwed into place .
thanks

it seems nobody has mentioned the most obvious option, take up the floor and replace with 25mm ply.

Too much heavy work and the risk of injury. It's a DIY forum.

Have you ever tried carrying a chunk of 25mm ply up stairs? Have you ever pulled up an entire floor? You have to take off the skirting boards which pulls chunks out of the wall plaster - so you then need the walls plastering. You have to remove the basin pedestal - with the basin. The toilet pan and cistern.

He wants a QUICK FIX - not a reason to gut the bathroom.

Get a grip Gareth.

the question here is why are you not here? do you get paid double time on sundays or just rota'd in?

I have pulled floors up.
The best finish is in the best preparation.

If you've done it - then you'll know its not a DIY job.

Where does it say he wants a QUICK FIX you idiot?

I pulled up an entire floor. And curried chunks of plywood upstairs. And changed rotten joists, And screwed the plywood in place. Will tile the floor soon. And I am a DIY-er. And a woman :D

galway1 - if your floorboards are in good condition, put 12 mm external grade ply on top, as the pros advise in many topics of this forum. If they are rotten as mine, get rid of them and put thicker ply. I couldn't find 25 mm, so put 2 layers of 18 mm. Measured the room in advance, decided about the exact cuts I needed and had them cut to size in B&Q. The joints of the 2 layers are staggered in accordance to each other and all the screws go to the joists, not just to the ply underneath. The floor is solid as a rock.
