Fitting shower tray

There are plenty of tile shops still going that haven't failed due to the credit crunch. I suggest that it's you that is talking crap (Jef does talk crap, but that's just in jest). The information I give out is solid advice.
Your name isn't Joe is it? Seems a bit of a coincidence...

how do I tile? People say to make a guide using a piece of timber and then they say to srew it to the wall etc.... is this needed with this? Any tips for how to get started?
Like any other task, it's a matter of establishing what you want to achieve and learning how to achieve it. In the case of tiling the objectives are:

1. Good and permanent adhesion.
2. A uniformly flat result.
3. Perfectly straight grout lines.

If you want an incredibly cheap crash course in tiling, then buy a 3' x 6' section of 18mm plywood, erect it vertically in the garden, buy some cheap white 150mm square tiles, and invest some good adhesive in a practise session. You can batten acrss the bottom to represent the shower tray, and tile upwards from that point.

You'll soon realise that you need to sort out the following before laying the first tile:

a) Determing where to put whole tiles and where to put cut ones.
b) How to cut.
c) Size of grout gap.
d) How much wastage to allow for, and how many tiles to buy.

Don't skimp on tiles - if you do the job in more than one go and buy different batches of tiles, the colour (even of white ones), and size, and thickness, is subject to subtle variations.

Totally agree with this in principle, although a bit of plasterboard to practice on would be cheaper than ply.but it would need bracing to stop it from bending. ;)

...use a slow setting adhesive for non-porous tiles on the wall.
Why? If this is the sort of advice you were giving out when you had your shop; it's hardly surprising it didn't work out.
Your harshness has frightened amsie off. Was it entirely necessary to do this - surely a fuller critique of his appraisal would have been more beneficial. From what he has subsequently written, it seems that he does have a degree of credibility but may be of different opinions based on his experience.

So gcol, you are a spoilsport, bounder and a cad, and IMO a bit of a rotter too ;) :!:

GCol, ok, i've been reading some of the posts from you and your BF JFoss, and tbh, both of you talk crap..

thanks, i was about to declare my undying love for you

I'll just tell you where im at. .

watch too much dragons den do we?

If anyone done a sticky and advised me to only use BAL adhesives, and white star a bath area, id be the one running a mile.

Or shall I put it another way, if one of my fixers asked for BAL bucket adhesives and told me they were the best, and to use white star around a bath, or told me that it's common practice to tile walls before floors, id sack him.

is this before he was out of work due to your failing shop?

Ok, I owned a tile shop for one year, it failed due to credit crunch. I lost quite a few quid in that venture and don't appreciate your little quip. Have you ever had the **** to try something like that?

or maybe down to the fact your blind to some things

I also have been tiling 20 years, and owned a contract fixing firm for 7 years. In that time, we have worked for a lot of the major housebuilders, metronet, and others, the list is too numerous to mention. We do our work mainly in and around London. Currently I have around 15 fixers working for me and have had upto 45 fixers working for me.

company name? i could state absolutely anything here, did you know im royalty and have a staff of ten thousand?

I have also been invited to Spain several times to the tile factories, and seen how tiles are manufacturered first hand. Ditto a few of the adhesive manufacturers. I also get yearly invites to the Tile Show London. You?

i get invited to all over the world actually, and that is fact, but does that make EVERYTHING i say correct? unfortunatly not.

I know reps from most of the suppliers, including Johnsons, Pilks, Granfix, Palace, and i'm always getting reps calling me wanting my business, including Ardex, Bal and all the others.c

is this something to be proud of? you know people employed to be friendly to tilers.

It seems to me yourself and JFoss are the "big daddies" here on the Tiling forum, and obviously don't like anyone else musceling in, so don't worry, I won't be sticking around after today, and you can go back to being the Daddies of tiling, advising people to waste money on BAL Products and talking crap, i'll get back to earning money out of my business.

ill miss your "musceling" but im not sure about the big daddy comment tho, im only 4 foot 8

dont let the door hit your a$s on the way out.

ta ta joe

That's nothing. I'm Sparticus and I'm not afraid to pose naked.

Yeah well...
Don't you think it a bit suspect that this "person" joins the forum just as Joe-90 gets banned? Then starts talking pants?
Is he banned? I never knew other than the, er, banter within another part of the forum.

If it is indeed the case, then I withdraw my character assassination and and happy to pronounce you king of kings, wiser than the wise, and a jolly good apple. Furthermore I am happy, nay ecstatic to hold you close to my bosom (well manboobs) and consider you my friend ;)

i think dextrous has got a room at a seedy hotel booked in readiness...
