I really think some comments about the BC plug are rather harsh.
Like any other electrical accessory, they pose no hazard if used as intended. Sure, it was not good when people used an iron which was supposed to be earthed on a BC plug and just left the green wire hanging loose outside the plug, or used multi-way BC adapters to connect two or three higher power appliances. But to run a string of fairy lights from a lamp socket with one really isn't a problem in my book.
