42" LCD TV; 'broken window' lines on screen

On new Year's day I had an accident with tghe TV, when a heavy piece of wood fell against it. It looked OK (plastic screen) but whn switched on, there's a black square with a series of black 'spider's web' lines radiating from it like a cracked window. These are slowly spreading, becoming wider and fuzzier. The picture 'behind' these is still there.

Anyway, the insurance company have said we must get two written quotes for repair or statements that it is irreparable. Knowing nothing about LCDs, I'm just wondering if this sort of thing is actually repairable or not.

I'm trying to avoid spending much taking it in a taxi to a TV repair shop (or two!), as it's huge, heavy and I don't own a car.

It's only repairable by replacing the screen. These often cost as much as the TV, sometimes more, as a spare part.

Assuming you are covered for accidental damage to contents...

You have advised them of your claim and told them the tele is broken and you have paid them a premium for replacement new for old. Send them a picture of the broken tele, and tell them they are also free to send somebody around to inspect the tele and give them a couple of dates when it is convenient for you to be in the house. If they don't turn up write to them and give them 14 days to replace the tele or you will replace it yourself and send them the bill (adding a reasonable amount for your time and out of pocket expenses). If they don't pay the bill then take it further.
