PME Earth terminal not available & DNO crazies!

Not quite sure what this test was you were doing between the E/N if you was getting 0 VOLTS between them. that is spot on as you have 0 potential.

As the result was in Ohms, I imagine the OP was measuring between L and E with a multimeter on resistance setting. The low reading isn't surprising given then N and E are now linked at the service head.

I said E&N in the post.

I just tested via a socket with power off (at the cu). It was always a amateurs test :)

I would have thought zero resistance would be right now that earth and neutral are joined?

Like I said...proper tests will follow by a qualified sparkie but I'd be interested in any links or instructions on further tests I can carry out using just the multimeter in order to verify the quality of the earth :)

Edit: BTW my test was using the 20K setting on the MM and with power off the E&N was 0 ohms. The E&L was 0.6 ohms and L&N 0.6 ohms as a matter of interest.

I'm sure they would, but that would be due to ignorance of the real costs of running a business where you employ people, and if they were in charge of such a business they'd go bust.

Please don't turn this thread into your battle with someone.

I'll + rate you to make you happy ;)

Back to the situation in hand.

I have a new isolator with 25mm² tails all shaped for a neat fit into the meter. They (npower) said they will come and do it for free but I need a certificate of compliance (should be Electrical Compliance Ertificate) to do it.

So that will be another £260 to pay my sparkie!

And people say regs make things safer!

I'm not commercial though and £160 to just open up and connect to a block is not right. I'm seeing this elsewhere (people being charged far less) so I'm no longer worried.

It is £160 to provide a van and tools, pay someone to organise the visit, pay the man to drive to your house, do the job and drive back to base/next job.

Many years ago one of my employers had a cost of around £80k a year to provide a man in a van with tools, or over 300 a day (No materials). Add on 12 years of inflation and their margin and £160 seems reasonable.

Cost nothing in the end so you can keep that theory ;)

If they were fitting PME then £160 would be reasonable. But for a guy to pop out and knockout a piece of plastic with his house key and say "stick it in there"..you can't justify it. Which they don't try to as it's FREE :D

ps. I run a business and blanket charging people because you and up costs like that is unrealistic and just another way to justify charging what you like.

10 mins journey, 5 mins on propery, 0 mins expertise = free. Fair enough.

If you were doing some sort or ring continuity test and testing the loops for Rn and R2 I would expect you to have some sort of resistance reading otherwise you have a problem

THis is what he was doing:

"my multimeter has gone from reading 3 ohms to now saying 0 ohms when I test the resistance between E&N on the downstairs ring. "

Why do you think he has a problem? It's a multimeter, remember, not a low ohms reading continuity tester.

I don't want a battle with anybody.

I just despair at the unbelievably juvenile and petty behaviour exhibited by some people on this forum. Quite what they hope to achieve, and quite why they think their idiocy is of benefit to the forum escapes me, but I note that whoever is doing it is unable to provide any justification.
