Since changing 3 port valve Sat the heating will not work unless hw is on also. Room stat works. I changed whole valve as old one was old design so did not split. I put all wires back in same places. Whats gone wrong.

check the wiring.
heating only should have 230v on white 230v on grey and 230v on orange call to boiler/pump.

The fact you get CH along with HW if only until HW is satisfied proves the room stat is ok and sending the valve to mid position.
It appears there is no power on the grey wire in order to send the valve from mid position to CH.
The grey is fed from 2 sources
1. If HW is on and becomes satisfied power from programmer to cylinder stat is diverted to the grey by the stat. If HW was not on, then this would have no effect. In which case.
2. A wire is installed direct from the programmers HW OFF terminal and this also goes to the grey.
Maybe a bad connection wiring in the new valve.
When both HW and CH are turned off, the grey should be live, its easy and worthwhile checking.
If the valve goes to CH position and it does not light boiler the fault will a micro switch.
If the valve does not go to CH position fault could be any of a few things.
If you're dealing with a new valve its most likely a wiring fault

ok have checked wiring and found
progrmmer off valve sets to w
programmer heat on valve to m
programmer hw & heat on valve to h

orange wire @ 12
white wire @ 9
grey wire @ 8

whats gone wrong

we really need to know what else is connected to the valve wires.

im not that up on connections as there are a lot of connections inside. I believe I put all wires back in same place as before. thanks

Appriciate your dilemma but the numbered connections are not relevent as there is not a requirement to follow any laid down spec. without know what they are connected to we dont know what's wrong and I would suggest you call an expert.

If the above is true it Suggests you have mixed up grey and orange, try swapping them round

Matt

grey has a blue with orange was single originally
hi rich
It's hard to make sense of the above statement
do you meanthe valve grey is connected to valve orange? if so thats wrong
what was single origonally?
Matt

ok orange is with black on 12 grey with blue on 8
swapped orange & grey actuator click constantly. how can i check new valve

Orange should be with, a minimum, of 2 other wires - call from cyl stat, switched live to boiler and maybe power to pump (unless you have another junction box/wiring centre)
