IM THINKING OF HAVING A NEW KITCHEN INSTALLED ,BUT WAS TOLD TO UPGRADE THE MAIN FUSE FROM 60 AMP TO 80TO100 AMP ,DO I REALY NEED THE UPGRADE AND WHY?,,,,,,CAN ANYONE HELP!!

We don't know? You tell us! And don't type in capitals.

Are you having a huge electric cooker installed?

Sorry about the capitals,,No there is no large cooker going in ,only a new induction hob running of a 13 amp socket

Are you sure the induction hob is plugged in?

These are generally around 5,000/10,000 watts!

Maybe thats why the electricians suggested getting the fuse increased?

Do you have an electric shower too? Or electric heating?

The new "Candy " induction hob runs off a 13 amp plug,Yes we do have a shower ,also her indoors wants a hot water dispencer on a 13 amp socket..

The electrician you employed has probably worked out your maximum demand having taken into account the new kitchen. That probably exceeds your main fuse.

You will need to speak to your energy supplier to see if they will uprate your main fuse to 80Amps - some will - some will do it for free - some will not - some will not do it because they will have to increase the fuse size on the two neighbours who share your supply.

It's got 2 zones at 1.4kW, 1 @ 2kW and 1 @ 2-2.6kW.

I make that 6.8 - 7.4kW, or 30 - 32A.

I can't think of any way it can be plugged in except having some sort of logic inside which stops you using all of the zones at once.

Ye cannae change the laws of physics - if you have a cooking appliance limited to 3kW then you'll be trying to cook food with the equivalent power of a small kettle and toaster.

Lunacy.

You're having a new kitchen - FGS get a proper cooker to go in it.

£10.00 for a HRC fuse supplied and fitted whats the problem

Common think!!!

What is the purpose of the fuse?

To protect the cable - yes.

So the cable current carrying capacity should be greater than the fuse - yes

If this house is 60amps then it is likely that the cable has been rated accordingly - increase the size of the fuse and you may have to increase the size of the supply cable.

Most, but not all, domestic electrictricity is distrubuted by underground cables in three phase. This means that a single phase it taken by one of three houses - So effectively you will share your electrical supply with two other neighbours. The load should be 'balanced' across the phases - which means that it should be equally distributed across each phase - so that each phase carries approximately the same current.
So if you randomly start changing the fuse size of 1/3 of the three phase you have to consider the effect on the 'balance'.
In otherwords, you have to consider how to rebalance the load across the three phases - so you either increase everyones fuse and or cable size or you leave it alone.

The last time I suggested to a client that he increase his 60 Amp to 100Amp main fuse, the DNO told him his bill would not be £10, but potentially £3000.

depends on the supplier or more importantly who you know within that organisation, the dno will tell you one thing because they cant be arsed processing a work order the guys on the ground will tell you something entierly different I know whos word I take as to what cable is underground wether or not is or can be PME'd and what fuse I can or cant have, thoses on the other end of the dno phone (if you can get through to the right department) know absolutly bugger all of any use
there should be a dedicated number issued to approved electrcians to get access to the right technical engineering information

Just because you increase the neighbours fuse size, it doesn't mean they are suddenly going to start drawing more current.

As the power consumed by a fuse is neglible, I assume the OP will also need to buy induction hobs for his two neighbours also if the DNO want to ensure the load is balanced...

[edit]
Typical, no comments about load balancing, then two come along at once
