What is the site? and how has it avoided rewiring for so long?

Have the fuses in the neutral side been fitted with links?

Vast and beautiful elizabethan country house/stately home, it's a long standing customer and slowly as things fail new wiring is going in but in the main its still got its original wiring which was fitted in 1937 - its an installation thats past its best by at least 30 years.

The original work was one to a very high standard which is probably why its lasted, the wooden fuseboards handle the power and the iron ones the lights, there are 6 of each spread around the site, the wooden ones have the letters cMG on the front and inside "Compagnie Merlin & Gerrin SA Paris".

In ten years of sparking i've had 3 nasty shocks, guess where I had them!!!!

Haha, looks like a nightmare place to attend for a loss of power, bet there is nothing to indicate whats fed from what

I guess lighting was the original installation and power was fitted a couple of years down the line then going by the fuseboards

Any asbestos in those boards? I've not seen merlin gerin rewireable boards before, but I expect the 30's may have been early enough to pre-date the use of the stuff for most application

Can you get RCBOs to fit

Whats the main switchroom like? lol

EDIT: spelling

We had a house like that, until I re-wired it.

The live and neutral fuses were not paired. Made live interesting.

No earths on the lighting circuit either.

There has been some modernisation to the install, that is definately a new bit of string on the pull switch

MMmm Double pole fusing, how long ago was that outlawed??? I do hope your client has made sure his buildings/liability insurance is upto date as that lot is a fire just waiting to happen, or someone is going to get seriously hurt from trying to work on that lot ., Still its nice to see how things used to be done with that kevel of neatness and pride in their work. Trouble is by the time you have rewired it all then you will need to start again as it will be more than 25 years since you wired it LoL
