Kitchen tap needs replacing. We can do it but can't find the stop cock to turn off the water. We are told that all houses have a stop cock under the sink but we haven't, nor anywhere else that we have looked. I rang the local Council and they said it is probably in the road outisde. It isn't. Neighbour said it is probably buried in the front garden somewhere. Problem.

It's your house, how should we know?

Follow the pipe from the kitchen sink tap and see where it goes. Very likely there is one near where it comes through the floor.

Also when the house was built, there was probably one in a pit next to where the front gate used to be. If you are in a row of houses ask your neighbours where theirs are.

Sometimes there is one in the pavement as well, and if you have a water meter there will probably be a stopcock incorporated in it.

I didn't expect you to tell me where our stopcock is JohnD. I was just commenting on our problem. I now realise I should only ask questions in future.

local water co. should locate it for you - could be in the pavement - not the road ;)

That was meant to be cryptic title John D. We have no pavements. It is just a lane, I'll sort it.

Thank you Nigel. I've been on to Thames water and they are sending out an engineer to trace it. The previous owner had a new kitchen fitted before we moved in and the water people say they may have taken out the stopcock. We have two taps in the garage. It may be one of those. We are going to test them.

Try taking out any draws you have, ours is behind the bottom draw of our four draw unit.

The man from Thames water has just been Nigel and the outside stop cock was under a bush between our and next door gardens. He said the pipes leading into the house could be in various places, so it may be one of the taps in the garage. But at least we can now turn off the water from outside.
