Hi I am hoping somebody may be able to help me:)

I have a Hyundai santa fe 2002 diesel auto, it started not starting a while ago only in very cold weather, so I had the glow plugs and the battery renewed and a full service and still the problem continued intermitantly, but now it is all the time, the car will not start without a whiff of easy start ,when it is running it is fine until the next day, the dealers said it needed a new injector which they did, it then worked for a week and now I am back to square one, the mechanic said it is as sweet as a nut once it is running no noise no smoke etc but they can not find the fault, is there anyone who may have an idea or know somewhere else I could take it in the Bolton/Manchester area,I would appreciate any help Thanks.

Hello Julie
You don't say how many miles your car has covered, but Easy Start is a dreadful and debilitating method of starting up a diesel engine.
Your garage needs to check the compression pressures on each cylinder, and see if they are within manufacturers tolerances.
They should also check for glow plug time duration i.e the amount of time they are actually working before you attempt to start.
The obvious problems such as glowplugs and battery, you seem to have attended to, and hopefully the garage is happy with the engine cranking speed (a slow starter motor will never get a diesel going, for example).
A diesel specialist will also be able to check each injector performance on the bench, if necessary.

Thanks for the reply, the garage has done all that you say and can't find the problem, and going to the main dealer is getting expensive Lol !

The car has done 70k which is nothing really.

If its common rail it might be the fuel pressure switch on the end of the fuel rail. These systems need at least 300 bar of pressure for them to start. i have found that easy start helps but should not be used for long periods of time. You need to get it on the diagnostics computer and find out what the switch is reading. if it has a scavenger pump this also might be a problem but not sure if your vehicle has one but just a thought.

Thanks for the reply, I am going to book it in again , but not at the main dealers I am going to go to the diesel engine repair diaognostics place and see what they say, I will suggest they check what you said, it does sound like you could be right, lets hope so, thanks again.

Always make sure that you have AT LEAST a quarter of a tank full of diesel. If the gauge is towards the red, then your diesel will be contaminated with the water that sits in the bottom of the tank. As a diesel engine requires highly volatile fuel to start, watering this down is not good !

With all due respect; the above is a lot of tosh.
It won't matter how much fuel is in your tank, the pick-up stays at the same level. And as water is heavier than both petrol and diesel, it always goes to the bottom and never mixes with the fuel. Until any water comes up to the level of the pick-up, and there needs to be a lot of water before that happens, it won't be lifted, regardless of how much fuel there is.
And, diesel isn't volatile.

Well, had a nother injector fitted and working ok up until now, so fingers crossed, it does sound noisier now and a little shakey Lol !

Thanks all x[/list]

It should not sound noisier or shaky at all, this points to (in my opinion two faulty injectors)
Take it back and tell them you are not happy, heavens knows they charge enough, if it's not fixed satisfactorily well it's down to them.

I trhink there's been a fair bit of faffing around here....I would have thought that each injector should have been bench tested - its easy and common enough.
If the engine is bouncing around then there is a variation in injector performance. I wouldn't be surprised if the engine was a bit smoky too.
