I've had a builder's quote of £900 (material only) for 20m2 of Howdens Professional Oak laminate.

I know this price has been marked up and I have decided to buy my own material from a local diy store and do it myself. However, I'm interested to know how much Howdens actually charge for the flooring.

If this is all top secret please can someone send me a private email?

and why do you think a builder has marked up this price? He's the one collecting the stuff, he's the one you'll go to when things go wrong - or your think go wrong. He's the one paying liability insurance etc etc etc. If you think a mark-up if pure profit, think again!

And you expect your builder to install the stuff you bought yourself?

The reason I know the builder has marked up the price is because I have received a variety of quotes.

And no, I am not going to use the builder, I will be doing it myself

So you wasted everyone's time getting quotes. No wonder there's a mark up

I'm not rude to be honest, just giving you the reasons why there is a mark up from businesses when you compare materials you can buy from DIY-sheds with materials supplied through builders and other businesses making a living from this.

Er, I thought it was the advice of everyone in the construction industry to get several quotes.

The way I see it, giving quotes is the way to get work, and I certainly don't see it as wasting time.

Unfortunately Capitalfm, I don't know the prices of Howdens flooring as I'm just a lowly decorator, but feel you are being treated a little harshly!! ;)

Oh absolutely. And both you and I know that time spent on surveys and quotes are part of the price you give = mark up. If you track the number of surveys and quotes made versus converted, this mark up can go up or down.
Mr CapitalFM (have a heart!) received quotes from various businesses, but plans to get the materials himself and do the work himself. Can't see the reason why you think my remark is a little harshly. I was just stating the facts as he showed it.

True enough, but we don't know if the quotes are within their budget so I don't like to judge too quickly. :)

He had a heart and edited the first entry, adding he'd plan to do it himself.

That's after this discussion started as you seen in the quoted text on my first reply. (Since we're talking about quotes anyway ;))

Perhaps I was a bit too quick of the mark, but there's nothing Top Secret about Howden Prices. I wouldn't know them anyway - we only do the real thing, not the melamine plastic stuff

Ah, maybe I was a bit quick to jump in as well then.

The missus does often say I'm a bit premature!

My original post asked for the price and this is all I'm interested in. If you don't know the price and you have contempt for the product, then why bother to comment in my thread and be patronising with it? Why not post your views about your customers in a seperate thread?

Then why edit your post when we ask some further questions instead of a new reply?

Bit of a daft question without specifying type or quantity.

Howdens give 70% discount to trade customers, same as Jewsons and others.

So even if a price was obtained, what builder paid would not be what was advertised.

It's not untypical, or unreasonable, for a builder to charge for sourcing and collecting materials (and dealing with returns etc), and 10% is commonly used. I do have a huge problem with the artificially massive discounts offered in this way though, as it allows an unscrupulous builder to overmark their sourcing fee hugely. So this arguement about builder man marking up is stupid, he doesn't /need/ to - he could be charging the punter more than twice what he paid and still be able to produce a bill saying he's giving them a discount.

BUT - and this is important - Howdens' stuff is good. The quality of their products is nearly always better than you'll get at B&Q, will give a better finish and last longer.

your builder has marked it up by more than double. I had a quote for that flooring today £377 for 24 sq m! works out at around 12.99 sq m plus 30 quid for underlay.
