Bought a set of Silverline hinge drills from Toolstation . First time I used them they fell to pieces . Toolstation sent me another set and they also fell to pieces first time I used them . End ot the day, you get what you pay for .

the only tool i have by them is a 6ft straightedge originally bought for ruleing off float coats, its crap for this as its too chunky and the edge is too thick and blunt to rule off nicley.
i only use it for cutting boards now hardly gets used, would never buy a power tool by them thats for sure

Worryingly, this tat is starting to appear in some of the more reputable outlets.

Have a look at their website see if you can work out how to contact them when the tool goes wrong.
No address,no phone number and no email address.
I wonder why?

I know there's a lot of people above writing silverline off. I have a silverline plaster mixer from the silver storm range, and I have to say it's pretty good. only time will tell. It's such a big company you have to use your own judgement on wether a product is worth the money.

I often buy Tesco Value range products some of it has been fantastic quality despite the low price other products poor. For example I used to use Tesco Value toothpaste. Did the job and I had no complaints. Then suddenly the quality dropped and I noticed the toothpaste was now made in china (used to be made in the UK) it tasted vile, I felt ill after using it and never touched it again. I upgraded to Tesco standard grade toothpaste and that was also rubbish and again made in china. I completely wrote off buying Tesco brand toothpaste ever again and yet still buy many Tesco value products which are excellent quality. I now use Morrisons basic toothpaste. Seems to be the same as the old style Tesco Value. Works great, made in the uk and cheap.

Same is true of Silverline they are an importer and some products are better than others. Its best to check out reviews and be careful but there are some real bargains in the range I'm sure. I've had Draper stuff that is rubbish and others which are brilliant. The benefit of buying something like Bosch is almost all their stuff is great but I have seen some Bosch drill bits written off as useless so even good brands have off days.

What I have noticed is sometimes you get tools imported from china that appear under many brands and the pricing varies by brand but the product remains the same.

My main electric drill is a 30 year old Bosch model that still works well to this day and thats extreme value for money but I've also bought poundland tools I'm more than happy with for the purpose I will use them for.

I've got a couple of 600mm heavy duty F-clamps, and they're excellent for the price. Very well made and solid as hell.

it all depends on what you want to use them for.
for the average DIY enthusiast who might be using a particular tool once or twice a year, there may be no point buying expensive tools.
for professional tradesmen, if you buy cheap, you buy twice, sometimes more than twice if you are unlucky.

having said that, I do have a silver line Darby.
as I don't do much rendering (mainly because I don't like it) it made perfect sense to buy a silver line Darby for £16 (this does the job perfectly well) instead of spending £50+ on a marshalltown one.
I don't use a Darby very often, but when I do, the one I have works fine.
I also keep a cheap set of chisels handy for jobs such as cleaning off glue, filler or paint.
basically any job that might damage my nice new Marple's chisels.

As burnerman once said 'the beauty of silverline tools is that they are so handy becuase you don't even need to bother unwrapping them before tossing them into the bin

Don't bother with Silverline.

I've bought a few things in the past, and although they've held up for the DIY task they were bought for, they haven't lasted beyond that.

Personally I'd prefer to spend 5x more for a tool and have it for life, seems like better value to me. Maybe I'm strange

I've never had any problems. You get what you pay for though. Got a Silverstorm combi which is more heavy duty but cost me more. had it for 8 months, no prob. Also got silverline sander. cost me £15. does the job but not a regular use sander. What more do you want? :p

I sell tools for a living, the only stuff of theirs I've found that are of any use are the whitworth spanners (I sell imperial tools) which are DIY use only (and identical to the Kamasa ones) and the oil sprayers.
I bought some power tools and sent them all back likewise compression testers and drills. I bought some car covers and one tore as I fitted it and the other I poked my fingers thrugh when taking it off.
The stuff is crap pure and simple,Chinese crap.
