My GW 30 CXI has suddenly become much noisier. It is a mechanical noise present whenever the boiler is running. Sounds like the pump or fan worn.

My questions are;

1) How can I pinpoint whether it is the fan or pump?

2) Presumably if it's the pump, it's DIYable, but if it's the fan am I allowed to touch this?

Many thanks.

Unable to advise without taking the casing off, which should only be done by a 'competent' person, whether it is the fan or the pump.

I can only suggest get in a registered gas engineer (independent) as, from experience, you will give a better service.

:)

Thanks, but I successfully changed the diverter and fixed filling valve leak with forum help, so would like to DIY this too. Zero funds. :(

The pump doesn't involve any gas, anyway, thought boiler work was illegal if I was doing it for money. It's my own boiler.

Why are you asking if you can touch it then.

Also its going to be very difficult for people on a forum to tell what and where a noise in your boiler is coming from :D

What kind of mechanical noise is it, the CXi is prone to a noisy stepper motor on the gas control valve RGI job to rectify tho!! ;)

It's a constant low rumbling noise all the time the boiler is on. Its quite loud and noticeable, the boiler used to be hardly audible as its in the loft.

Have had to switch the HW pre-heat off, as like most noises it seems amplified at night when everything else is quiet. Really sounds like worn bearings or something very similar.

Is the stepper motor in gas valve energised/working all the time boiler is on? If it isn't then it isn't this.

Many thanks for your help.
