Hi All,

Just wandering what the expected minimum shelf life of a powdered product should have remaining when purchased from a merchant. I ask as on December 22nd I ordered some Thermaline plasterboard and Gyprock adhesive (2bags) for a job at home that I would be doing in the new year. As the VAT was about to rise as of jan 3rd I made my purchase early to save on this. Having come to do the job now, I've noticed that the Plasterboard adhesive was out of date on the 5th March 2011 meaning it was only in date for 10 weeks when it was delivered to me by Jewsons. Have rang them today and they basically said 'tough sh!t!'

What are your thoughts guys? Should I have expected more from them?

Not sure if plaster is the same, but with tile adhesive and the like you usually get 12 months shelf life. I wouldn't have expected them to hang onto it for the first 10 months of its life :!:
I doubt there's much you can do about it but I'd expect more.

K

i think plaster has a shelf life of about 6 months, to be honest thiers not anything you can do unless it was out of date when you bought it, jewsons dont know your goin to sit on it for a few months before you use it, see it like buying milk then leaving it for months then complaining to sainsburys that its gone out of date, its down to the buyer to use it within the regulated time.
sorry

MY THOUGHTS? ilmao you have bought pruducts in dec and have not used them before march? to save a rise of vat on 2 bags? plaster i think has a shelf life of 4 months it used to be 3 but they changed it to 4 and as far as i know its still the same unless they have changed it again, im not sure on addy but i was always taught, (well its one of the first things i was taught actually) always check the date on the bag, you bought the products while they were still in date and had loads of time to use it, no you cant grumble about that im afraid

Thanx for the replies guys, guess I was asking too much. Annoying thing is I ordered the boards (10 of) for delivery and the guy asked if I needed any fixings etc, so on spur of moment ordered the 2 bags so I had some in if I unexpectedly got some unplanned spare time to get the project going. As it was too cold to level the floor over the xmas hols I never got round to it till now. It meant having to remove the last bit of my kitchen to do it so needed to plan when I could be without water for a week or so downstairs. Really annoying thing is my local refuse center will charge me 2 quid a bag to dispose of it so is over 20 quid down the pan in all. Hey ho!

Is there any point in seeing if its still ok to use? will have mechanical fixings in each board too as it's insulated.

put it down to experience :D :D
sometimes you gain sometimes you loose
do not be put off just ask on here for guidance a wee bit more often :D :D

....yeah i bought 20 pints of milk to avoid paying tuppence in vat, now that has gone mouldy too.

Tightwad.

Get your story right or we'll think you are setting out to deceive.

i would give it a go its only just gone out of date but thats me its up to you i have a tub of out of date blue grit i used on one of my lids its still up there, but a further 6 months down the line i still had it and was about to skim my kitchen but dident chance it this time as it started to seperate and smell funny so i forked out for 2 tubs of wba to be on the safe side even though the test patch of blue grit i done was ok and comparable to the bondit i had used on the other walls, at the end of the day anyone using out of date gear is taking a chance
