Jon's right, but any SCART lead should work well enough for connecting a VHS video.

Also, have a look in your TV's instructions, as you can usually select how its SCART socket(s) are configured. Specifically, you can often select CVBS, RGB or S-Video. If this setting's wrong, you can get exactly the symptoms you describe.
Try CVBS (also known as composite) first of all.
