Hi

About to go out and buy the first pieces of wood that will eventually become a shed, 1st job is to put down a wood foundation am thinking 2" X 1" lengths screwed together to make this kind of frame

Beesleys do 3/4" MDF boards at 8 foot by 4 so 2 of these would cover this frame

Would simply attach this frame to 4 wooden posts buried 1 foot deep into the soil

Can anyone see a problem with this, plan so make it as cheap as possible reckon the 2"x1" around 15-20 quid and the 2 MDF boards are 17 quid each

All comments welcome

Ever tried to stand on a bit of 2x1? It'll break like a twig.

MDF will not survive being used like that.

I think you're going to need to increase your budget. A lot.

I used 4 wood pallets [completely free] gives 2m X 2.4 base and used osb on the floor, cheaper than mdf and mdf is useless for external use.

You can’t use MDF as a shed floor; it’s unlikely to last through a single winter. Unless you’re seriously into woodwork (& with the suggestion like that, I doubt it), building your own shed is madness; it’ll be complete sheite & a ready build shed will be far cheaper than you can possibly buy suitable materials from either a conventional DIY shed or even a Builders Merchant.

Starting with the frame

How does 2X1 snap like a twig? This here is 2X1

looking on Argos for similar size = £500+ are you seriously telling me the materials for any shed come to that much?

Go ahead and stand on the long bit at the front..

Have you considered the amount and size of timber you'll need to create a shed which won't fall down if you lean on it?

Never seen 2x1 used as a frame before, the base would ideally be made of concreet. Not 4 posts into soil.
At least a 4 " thick good strong mix onto top soil.
MDF will absoreb water and look like flaky pastry in no time.
Its more hydroscopic than normal timber.

But i`m only going on a few I have built.

That's going to form part of a shed base  why are you burrying it 1ft in the ground, to stop it blowing away  It'll also rot out within a couple of years.

Got to say I've never seen such a crackpot idea in my entire life  In the words of the inimitable, “sorry, I’m out”

Who in their right mind buys a shed from Argos, what’s wrong with these;

That’s just a one off Google; if you search around I’m sure you will find something cheaper. ;)

make the frame out of 4"x2" lay it on concrete blocks i cut them in half, place them 2 feet apart. cover it with sterling board, use at least 2"x2" for the uprights and feather edge for the walls.

You won't get much cheaper than that

my shed costs around £1200 plus fully designed and built by me
a shed will be around 30 to 50% cheaper iff you buy off the shelve
i used 3x2 timber for all structural timbers at 600mm centres

its not the tidiest or best looking but it is the most compact and flexible i can make it
every area is fully thought out before finalisation to give maximum storage and flexability
six years on it is much more efficient at usage and storage

definatly nothing smaller than 3x2 treated supported at 600mm centres
no mdf except for internal partitions assuming you keep the damp out

No clearly you can't use 2x1's for the base but they're fine for the walls. I used 2x1 for the framing for my shed 11 years ago, still as solid as when I built it.

OK so maybe pinned in each corner wont suffice so ide simply add more in the middle of each piece!
