Velux install question? Help !!!

Okay so I'm in the process of fitting a velux.

Now measuring to get no silly thin tiles either side is okay, but I'm confused by the up and down positioning. I have read in numerous places that you should not cut the row of tiles above the window, but if I measure up from the bottom tile row batten as per the instructions I cant see how I can not have to cut the top row as it ends up 2/3rds the way up a tile, likewise if I drop it down then I'd have to cut the bottom tile, and given I want to install it with just 1 tile under I dont have room to drop it down anyway.

Is cutting tiles above the window such a big no no ???

I'm no roofer and have very little experience of roofing...

it's my understanding that concrete develops a kind of skin as it sets and by cutting the tile you break the skin and adversely affect the porosity of the tile.

but couldn't you just remove the tiles and baton immediately above the window fit a new baton at the appropriate height and refit the tiles?

Just comments I've found online whilst researching velux installs, not on here I might add.

So cutting the row above is fine. Thanks.

The only downside is you will lose your tile 'seat' when cutting the bottom off.

Being 'inventive' with the hidden tile kicker is the answer either that or cut the top off the tile and re drill.

Shame they said it wont rain here today and suddenly this afternoon there is thunder and torrential rain. Thank god for big blue tarpaulins!

All woodwork is done though, so tomorrow its fitting the window, flashing and sorting the tiles .... they say it will be sunny
