I've been making a 100mm hole in an external wall for an extractor fan. I drilled out the tiles and cut a hole in the plasterboard. Behind this was a cavity (approx 120mm) filled with insulation, then some layers of a sticky tarpaulin type material stuck to (approx 12mm) of timber, and then sky...I was expecting a layer or 2 of brick at some point.

Is this normal or should I be worried?

if you have a look at the outside of your house, you should be able to see if it is made of brick, timber-clad, tile-hung, or something else.

The downstairs is brick, most of the upstairs is weatherboard. I always assumed that the board was over the top of brick though, didn't realise the upstairs was just weatherboard and plaster board.

Just make sure you keep it dry. If you got Sarah Beeny around with her team of experts she'd take you up to the BRE and show you what happens to cardboard houses when you spray them with water. Not pretty.

I'd spray her with something else
You old tom-cat you...

What a nice pussy.

*edit* Bleedin censorship! Mrs Slocombe would have a hard time on here.
