I think the thanks button is pointless on many levels.

I've heard the argument, that the more thanks you have, the more trusted you are to the OP............... B*llocks I say..

Plumber with 700 thanks gained in the plumbing forum then could well give crap advice in Electrics forum.
All these thanks gained in a completely different forum unbeknown to the trusting OP.!!!!! It's b*llocks.

I have a simple solution...............

Thanks gained in any specific forum will show up IN THAT FORUM ONLY.
For example.............

Plumber with 700 thanks gained in the plumbing forum has 700 thanks showing when he gives advice there.
When he gives advice in the carpentry forum and has only been thanked twice.......ONLY 2 shows.

:D You know it makes sense. :D

Totally agree.
Far too many here give advice with no knowledge or a pretense of something.

The Thanks system was changed as the general dross who frequent the GD forum were appearing in threads throughout the rest of the forum appearing to newbie members as members with some good advice to give when in reality they have been thanked countless times in countless irrelevant threads by some other equally brainless individual for some dopey comment on how they'd like to get rid of all the immigrants or whatever.

The system is not ideal but generally most with high thanks levels offer good advice.

@Mw Roofline the thumbs down system was trialled I recall, don't remember what happened to it though.

Nonsense.

But more importantly, are you then saying, that a renowned structural architect/designer, specializing in staircases, visiting the staircases forum and giving advice should be 'f*cked off out of it ' because of his views on immigration in a completely separate forum.???????

MADNESS.

The thanks system was implemented to allow newbies to judge posters who commented on their posts.

Generally speaking a member with high thanks gives better advice than those with little thanks. Its not brain surgery you know.

No it doesn't, for the reasons I made an example of at the top of the page.

Its not brain surgery you know.

Thank f*ck for that ............. You'd kill us all.

Bad system Freddy.

Should never have been implemented and ultimately helps not a single forum newbie on ANY site that has multiple forums.

It's misleading and thus wrong.

BAN IT.

May be they need a system similar to Ebay, whereby you can see both good and bad feedback. That allows people to draw their own conclusion, and an opinion.

No disagreements with my original solution though...?????????????

Thanks only shown in relevant forum sections.

I'm right.

So that would presumably extend to having a "thanks" count for GD contributions only? It would be quite interesting since presumably the poster with the most GD thanks represents the most commonly agreed stance, and who should thus be our leader

I vote that there ought to be an "ego" button or an "ego-meter" specifically for the General-give-myself-a-slap-on-the-back-Discussion section.
