i have a mains version of this in a box under my stairs.... should i fit it? is CO poisoning a realistic proposition?

If you have gas appliances, then CO poisoning is a possibility, though extremely rare.

Make sure your appliances are serviced.

It is rare for the ones whom it kills.
You cannot see it, smell it taste it or feel it.

If you have one use it. If not get one.

PS they should be replaced after 5 years of service as opposed to 10 years for smoke and heat alarms.

really? the one under my stairs in a box has been there over 10 years.... is still gonna work? do you mean a 5 year working life?

Working life.
But in your case buy a new one.
I would not trust it with my children's, friends, guests lives.
