First and foremost you have to want to give up.

Again, they are not sold as quitting aids.

Notice the lack of the words "quit" or "give up".

Only pharmaceutical companies market them as quitting aids, and want to see them all branded as quitting aids (so they can be regulated, making it easier for pharmacy to get a monopoly on the product).

They should be banned. Nicotine is possibly the most addictive drug known. Why is pushing it legal?

I did smoke years ago (about 30). That's how I know that the initial rush is not from nicotine - as the rush is instant. Just give it up like I did. Even Russian Roulette gives you a 1 in 6 chance of survival. With tobacco - it's 1 in 2 - the same as flipping a coin. Head's you live an unhealthy life - tails you die a nasty death.
Thanks for the reply Joe, at least you do have some experience of smoking.
However, I don't understand this 'rush' everyone keeps mentioning. I don't get a 'rush' or feeling of instant euphoria I just find a smoke a pleasant relaxing interlude in the daily grind of life. I'm ot lookig to using one of these as an aid to giving up just a way of 'reducing' the harmful effects of smoking to myself and others around me.an afterthought Joe, when you mention the figure of 30 is that how long ago you gave up?
If so, how long did you smoke for and on average how many per day. Where they mild, normal or full strength?
These questions apply to everyone who says they have given up, by whatever method, not just Joe.
For the record, barring a 10 month cessation spell in 1993, I have smoked since about 15. I am now 55. Usual start up, 5 Park Drive, then No6 before moving on to B&H in the gold pack. Around about 20/21 I started to roll my own using GV. Still do to this day but I put 2 filters in so the fag is only a short one. On an average day I get through 15-20 of these, on a bad day maybe 25-30. If I'm having a good day or have the G/kids with me I can get by on about 7-10. My day starts at 6.00am and I rarely go to bed before 1.00am

I smoked from about 16 to 26. I gave up about 30 years ago. I used to smoke mainly Old Holburn in the early days, and later Camel, Disc Bleu and Gauloises. About a pack a day I suppose.

Not exactly a light weight then eh?
That gives your comments more credence than someone who was had a Pall Mall round the back of the bike sheds!

I don't know what this rush is either.

I used to get a bit light headed when I first tried smoking at school, but that's it.

Did a bit of maths - 20+ a day for 20+ years = 150000+ ciggies, each one of which could have been (and indeed may have been) "the one".

Read Allen Carr "easy way" which did it for me for a couple of years until I saw my old fella laid out on the slab, at which point I lit up again for a couple more years until I saw my mother on her death bed. After this I read the longer version of the book, very slowly, and it did it for me. Not smoked for over 3 years now and apart from the rare 20 second twinge; it's been great.

Well 9 yrs clean for me.
40-60 Rothmans a day.
That was over 27 yrs or so.

Gave up, no gum or patches. Decided after a scare enough was enough.
