Hi, we have a riello regular oil boiler and have noticed a massive jump in oil consumption.
There are no obvious leaks in pipework or tank. The cage around the flue is carbonised. Could it be a problem with burner or injector? Runs central heating and aga.

Has the boiler been serviced recently?
Bearing in mind they will run for years without servicing.
Mine hasn't been serviced in 14 years and still runs smoothly and efficiently. Only replaced a capacitor in that time.
Grant with a riello burner. The fit and forget boiler. The best.

Many people look at the cost of fuel instead of the quantity.

We have also had a very cold winter compared with recent previous years.

My friend in France lost five rads in frost damage last winter.

Never had boiler serviced? Not even to preserve the second year warrantee!

Probably not that surprising then! 20 li/day means nothing without the size and insulation being given.

not exactly great advice. modern condensing boilers especially grant will almost need the condense trap cleaned. ok not rocket science. but then the bit will come when the boiler needs cleaning out. did a 7 year old worcester the other week that was caked inside. and never been serviced. pump pressures will eventually drift as well as co2. filters need checking. and almost certainly the oil flexi line checked. and most common, people actually not rating the boiler with the correct nozzle.

If around a 70,000 boiler, then to use 20 lts per day means it is running for about 5 hrs. If flue guard is carbonised, then it is running rich, and if the boiler is sooted up, this will impair heat transference.
What is the Aga it is running? If you also have an Aga, then this will use about 8-10 lts per day.

Soot on the terminal guard indicates that the fuel old is not atomising, this may be down to a worn nozzle, loss of pump pressure, blocked air intake or blocked heat exchanger.

By the sounds of things the boiler is going to require a de-coke.

As an oil fired heating engineer, I would advise this, it is unwise to miss servicing on oil boiler.

The tank requires a check, as does water content in the tank in addition to boiler's safety checks, and check to final connection hose - an oil leak in the house isn't funny.

If you have an oil leak and the Environment Agency gets involved the fines and costs of the remedial work are eye watering, the fact that you have neglected maintenance will compound the problems, most service inspections cost around £85.00 - won't it IMHO.
