Dodgy trip switch?

I

About 10 years ago i built a conservatory, and extended the ring main from the dining room into the conservatory. I also put in a cheap outdoor socket spurred from one of the double sockets in the conservatory, via an RCD.

In the last year, i've bought a much better double outdoor socket, and replaced the old thing, and it's been fine until this weekend. Firstly i wanted to cut up a pallet with my circular saw plugged in to the outdoor socket, and did most of it, but it tripped after about 10 mins....and then every time i reset it. The next day we tried the lawnmower, and got by for about 5 minutes, and it tripped....

Today, the wife decided to hoover the decking (don't ask!!!! ) and the hoover ( a Henry) survived fine.....

So any ideas why it might be tripping?

Not necessarily. Could be an internal connection or the carbon brushes worn down on your saw and mower, not to mention damp in the tools or shorts in the windings etc.

thanks Conny, but switch ok for 12 months, then on the same weekend, circ saw trips, and mower trips the next day.... and Henry the hoover is ok..... seems to me to be about how much 'juice' the kit needs !!!!

Can you plug your saw/mower into another socket on a circuit protected by an RCD and see if that RCD trips?
This would potentially rule out your outside socket as being the culprit.

Yes, we just used the garage socket which is on it's own consumer unit, protected with an RCD !!
