Technically it's stealing but......

Not sure if this comes under stealing but here is my bit, my brother in law was a plumber for a university about 8 years ago and they had a room refit after the last refit about 12 months previous?? but the old (12 months old) ofiice furniture was getting skipped and the management said under no circumstances could anybody have anything...still dont know why though, anyhow we went in a sunday evening as he had keys and relocated chairs, desks and cabinets all in almost brand new condition... so if its from a skip on private property is this classed as stealing or recycling?

It's classed as stealing!

Woman caught rifling through the bins at tesco (not a tramp, a bloody new age eco hippie) was charged and convicted of theft. Judge found on case law which says that even if someone throws something away they retain ownership of it. (and can effectively decide whether it goes to the dump or not)

Yes nowadays it is classed as stealing. 30 years ago or so when my father worked for the council some bright spark had the idea of prosecuting people for taking things out of skips but was told bluntly by the police that charging someone with stealing rubbish was hardly a crime and not worth persuing. Nowadays as has been pointed out it's theft  that's progress for you.If a skip is on private property I'll normally ask if I can before diving in.
Taking something that a firm has finished with and is going to throw away is a world apart from taking something they are still using such as the pens mentioned above.

Think it goes back longer than that mate... websearch i did said in 1877 some guy dug up a diseased pig carcass someone had buried and sold it. The court said the guy still owned it and had to the right to have it remain buried if that is what he wanted so the guy got charged with theft.

But I agree that sometimes it can seem barmy what people throw away!

When I worked in a foundry as a maintenance fitter a mate of mine used to pince loads of stuff every day he had a fab workshop fully fitted I asked why he did this he said "you've got to make up your expenses you incur coming to work "when he died he left a fortune so when I come back I'm going to be the biggest thief ever

So your friend was a thief who stole from his employer and you had to ask him why he "did this"?
Didn't it ever occur to you that your friend was light fingered git and that it was time to end your friendship?
Let me guess, the foundry is now bust and closed down?

All the foundries are bust and closed down.

No this place is going great guns one of the biggest drop forgers in Europe with full order books glad I'm out of there now

Seems to be a few people here who have adopted the "i wouldnt do such a thing" attitude so those that do i ask you to think back to your childhood and say you never went in the sweet shop and picked up a blackjack for instance ? come now cough up your little misdemeaners

Good point.
I stole a packet of mint vicount once along with my cousin but the shop owner had sussed us. We were outside about to leave on our bikes when the owner came out and started rifling our school bags for the vicount.
Well it was in my cousins bag. I'd put it there so he got the blame.
Should have seen the look he gave me. I was cracking up and hardly fit to sit straight on the saddle.

Two other things I did to him now springs to mind.
I threw a stick through his front wheel spokes and put him over the handle bars at speed. (Only meant to bounce it off the tyre)
And lifted a big slab of ice from a lake and smashed it over his bike. He then lifted an even bigger slab and smashed it over mine.
Kids eh?

Tesco, incidently, burns leftover meat to generate electricity. Not only that, they can be fined if they fail to keep tight control of their rubbish process.

Cajar , do you happen to have a link to the case of the woman being charged by tescos ? I know several people who would be interested in that story.

Here you go http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/art...-raid-woman-admits-handling-stolen-goods.html

She said she took 100 packets of ham to 'feed her family' but she is single and childless so from her picture it looks like a bit of a pork addiction to me.

How do you efficiently burn meat to make electric? that's means creamatoriums should be self sufficient.

It might not be efficient for us to buy a £5 steak to throw on the fire, but if the meat is already going to waste then even if its 10% efficient its better than nothing. They might let it putrify and extract methene gas from it?

I had a steak for dinner you'd have thought it'd been on a fire left it in the pan too long but really we've all pinched something at one time or another
Which reminds me I've a friend doing time for stock taking as it wasn't his stock to take
