chickens and pigs

The dog loves sprouts, any sort of brassica in fact. He will roll over for the brocolli stalk without even being asked to. Probably illegal to feed him them too, RSPCA do-gooders will be tracing my IP address as I type.

He does prefer them lightly baked with a cheese sauce, but will steal them raw if he gets the chance.

Why is it illegal to feed veg scraps to them?

All comes down to DEFRA.
After the scares concerning salmonella, BSE , and foot and mouth a series of measures were brought in to prevent animal waste from entering the animal feeds. It was primarily intended to control ruminant feeds (cows for example- pigs are monogastric) but a pretty much blanket ban was introduced.
To be totally accurate it's not veg scraps that are illegal but kitchen scraps. This means that if you peel your spuds outside you can feed them to your animals but if you bring them into the kitchen then they become an illegal foodstuff because of the possibility of cross contamination, think of similiar regulations concerning raw and cooked meats for human consumption and you get the general idea.
I'm not 100% sure but if your animals never enter the general food system (i.e. they stay on your land and are slaughtered for your own consumption) so there is no possibility of contaminating an abattoir then you can feed them what you wish but otherwise you could be imprissioned for up to 2 years. Of course if they are your own it would be unlikey that you are rendering down dead sheep for animal feed in the first place.

My family really want us to keep some pigs but I can't bring myself to have them killed so we're not having them.

I eat meat but couldn't bear the thought of killing and then eating something I've raised :?

Time you became a veggie then...

When our chooks stop producing they get humanely dispatched...and our kids see the reality of it!

Depends how old they are as to whether they get eaten...

The chickens that is... :D

But nothing like knowing where your food actually comes from to teach respect for animals' welfare imo...

My grandfather died when I was around 7 and I can still remember my dad chasing a cockrel around the yard trying to catch it, and eventually pulling its neck. I can then remember my mother cooking it and we as a family sitting down to eat what could have passed as an old boot it being so tough. Point is though my dad didn't believe in sugar coating reality and I learn where food comes from from an early age.

An old hen makes a good curry. Got to boil it for a day first, but not half tasty.
