Earth bonding on gas inlet pipe

...When PME and other non TT systems came into being the "earth" wire should have been re-named to be the CPC.

Someone must have been at least partially listening to you - since that has, of course, very largely happened.

If the meter fitter was that concerned could he not of turned the mains off whilst he swapped the gas meter?

Have a think about earthing, bonding and double pole isolation......and whether the earth is switched...

No real need to do that thinking if it's TT

I fear that I am probably very misunderstood around here. If you can but believe it, as far as I am personally concerned (i.e. if others are not involved) I am very much a 'high risk taker', with no concern about small, let alone vanishingly small, risks. You would probably be surprised, if not shocked, by some of the risks I am happy to take or live with. However, not only is this a DIY forum, but many electricians, and many electrical regulations, appear to focus on very small (sometimes even vanishingly small) potential risks - so, just as in some other walks of my life, I have to adopt a far more risk-averse position (than that which comes with my personality!) when writing here!

My simplistic thinking was that if the supply was off there was nothing to create any potential difference between the pipes on either side of the meter. I'm guessing I'm barking up completely the wrong tree.
