Hi all,

I have recently been informed that a gas engineer can remove the protective bonding from a gas meter when making an alteration or replacing the gas meter and leave it off.

The only catch is that the gas engineer has to inform the responsible person, eg. customer so that they can arrange for a 'competent person' to reinstate the bonding connection.

I have come across this many times and am shocked that this is allowed considering the purpose of protective bonding. I am not sure if this information is accurate and feel it may be that the gas engineer is obliged to inform the responsible person if no bond is present in the first place. I am struggling to understand this if it applies to them removing a bond that is already present.

I am grateful for you view on this.

That sounds crazy to me, I happened upon a rental house where the tenant had not paid the gas bill and therefore the meter got changed to a card meter, upon the property becoming vacant the landlord had me in to do a PIR and the gas bond was attached to a pipe that had been cut out of the existing pipework and just left in the cupboard where the meter was, doing nothing!
