What should I use to fill in hearth before laying flooring

Hi
I've removed the hearth which was bedded on cement and this area is lower than the floor boards.
What should I use to bring this up to the level of the adjacent boards?
Will I need any membrane over this area or will the normal foam underlay be sufficient?

Cement and then membrane, then underlay.

Thanks - does it need to be a full blown membrane or will a sheet of heavy duty plastic do?

I'd imagine heavy duty plastic will do the job, just don't cover the wood area at all.
