Twitter for work.

I've not been self employed for too long so myself and the other half have enroled on a business course , well actually it's the second and neither have cost us anything not that that's important.
Now the other day the lecturer was trying to convince us of the merits of twitter and for that matter blogging as well. To be honest none of the students could see the point and it just seemed a waste of time. Several of us already use facebook and have gotten work out of it but we couldn't see twitter working the same way.
Does anyone on here use twitter for any work related stuff and if so how does it work or help?

Yes, its used extensively by my company. This would be better posted in trade talk as most regular GD users see social media as a 'scurge' as they don't understand it, don't need to use it... therefore find it useless.

I will discuss the topic there if you wish to re-post.

Although I don't use it - I detest it.
But I can if I want - using the timesheet program I use (Grindstone2) enables me to tweet every time I start a task, end a task etc so that the customer can see that I am on their job.

Heck knows why on earth I would want to do this or why they would give a monkeys.

IMO there are some things on this earth that have been put here to be a total waste of our time.
Twitter is one.

Thanks matty, er I think, I'm still non the wiser but hopefully MD will get back to me to say exactly how it is used "extensively".

On the course one lady makes and sells cakes, weddings birthdays that sort of thing, so we chose that as something to look for on twitter and to be quite honest it was a struggle to find suppliers or makers . We came away thinking it really was a very poor mans google. The lecturer was also saying that it is set to overtake facebook (?) for some reason.

Twitter is only any use really, if you have followers. So if your followers where potential customers and you had no work for Friday, you could Tweet you are offering a discounted rate or available. Having "follow us" on your website does make you look more real and adds weight to your online presence. It's also 'one of those many things' that Google looks for when ranking your website. Facebook is the best way, as you are telling your social network about your achievements and in this way, reminding your friends to mention you when some asks them for a recommendation. Show pictures of your work all the time (if you are any good!)

I'm yet to get involved with the Twitter revolution - although as suggested above, and I have to add reluctantly - I am involved with facebook (although I don't have a personal account), I find it useful for customers to be able to cross reference me on. They seem to like it.....I only add the occasional status updates, but do upload photos on it.

All my suppliers are using twitter. Many of my customers 'follow' my business as I continually update with new technology (look at Honeywell), and 'discounted' prices on system upgrades etc. My charges are transparent so potential customers can reference a price, then email me to book an appointment. I do charge for full system quotations or if I have to use my thermal imaging equipment, and that is where my business is growing now. All this is done through twitter. My business facebook page is linked in, so an update will be seen by council scum or the tweeters. If you had a handyman turn up to assess your heating system, heat loss, you'd show em the door. Whereas, I'm unleashing the FLIR and collating the images to use with the software on this pc and can provide an extensive report. I actually have been asked to go to LA for a customer that used to live in the uk, to report on the air-con. Its 3 months work with all the domestic plumbing she wants doing, so Ill be off in September.
