Hi, has anyone successfully removed ground elder? Last year we removed the elder by forking them out, but they keep coming back.

Can anyone recommend a product to kill the ground elder for good?

Thank you.

Nuclear bombs or moving house!

Seriously though, have you tried weedkiller. Not very green but it may be the only thing that works. If you have plants growing between the weeds you could try painting it on the elder leaves.

Your aim is to overwhelm the plant no matter how widespread the problem is. It's a war of attrition and it's yours for the winning...

I spray once to weaken then approx 1 week later get stuck in digging out whatever I can. It's important to get all of the root system (looks like egg thread noodles) so sometimes it's better to take the 'gentler' aproach and pull as many of the roots as possible by hand. The last time I dealt with ground elder this worked in a border approx 20m by 2m with one app of spray, one tug and remove and one follow up spray to get those niggly little b@st@rds I missed. If it spreads to a lawn don't worry as it cannot stand regular mowing.

Once iradicated keep a beady eye out for elder and get on top of any you see. Like any plant/weed you want rid of it comes to a point when you take the upper hand and eventually you'll feel so chuffed you'll be wanting it to come back so you can kick some more @r$e.

Thanks for this useful information, what would be the best weedkiller to use? Roundup or Weedol or something else?

Thanks again

Plenty of advice on the web, as for weedkiller...
Chemical control
The most effective weedkillers contain glyphosate, a non-selective translocated herbicide applied in mid-summer when there is plenty of leaf growth. Check for regrowth later in the summer and re-treat. Glyphosate is inactivated on contact with the soil, so there is no risk of damage to the roots of nearby ornamentals. However it is essential to prevent the spray from coming into contact with the foliage of garden plants.

The residual herbicide dichlobenil (Casoron G4 Weed Barrier) can be used in early spring around certain established trees and shrubs (check the label for details).

I was really looking for tried and tested weedkillers, as this stuff is so expensive and there is a vast choice. I have read roundup is pretty good from browsing various websites.

If either Roundup, Weedol or Weedol 2 are available to you they'll do the trick nicely.

There are many brands to choose from obviously.

If you look at the picture of my garden, in the garden pictures thread, you will see on the RH side, over the fence a mass of ferns.

These are similar to ground elder, in that they have a massive root system. Do not dig them up, as any root you break will become a new plant.
I used Roundup initially, which was very successful, then I chopped off any new growth at ground level.
If you keep cutting off any new growth at ground level you will eventually exhaust the root system......
