Hi All,

Is there any fundamental issue with getting a house reroofed during the winter as I have been offered a deal to do so now rather than wait for the summer?

Thanks

Only if it pi55es with rain when they do it!

Or snows etc. ;)

You need to make sure that they include for temporary protection at least until the roof has it's new felt on. It must be in writing.

So long as the roofer is taking the risk of damage to the felt etc. it could be worth considering.

Make sure they have insurance (not just public liability) to cover damage to your property you should get a copy letter from their insurers or brokers, then you ring them to make sure it is paid up!. Check with your own insurers what is and is not covered.

Derby? It's probably as likely to rain in summer as in winter :)

In principle it should be fine so long as they get the membrane on quickly and in the dry. One other thing to watch is the temperature when mortar is placed for ridge tiles and other detail. There should be no chance of frost while it's curing and if the temperature is low it will take a while to cure anyway. Lots of mortar fails because it's been placed during unsuitable weather.

Course you can re-roof during winter! You're average terraced house can be stripped felted and battened in a day, dry verge and ridge not a drop of mortar to be seen. ;)

Depends what he means by 're-roofed'.

Also, bear in mind that the roofer is unlikely to be able to complete any 'wet' work should the temperatures decide to drop below freezing.

We managed to successfully complete a ridged hip bungalow last winter in sub-zero temp's, but it took a lot of effort and faffing about.

Thanks.

The re-roofing is to strip off the old tiles, laths & felt then replace and also new leadwork to the chimney etc.

The property is a 3 Bedroom Bungalow with a Hip & Ridge roof.

Thanks

Stephen
