Pull light in bathroom broken. Bathroom no window so pitch black. Extractor fan wired in to come on when light is on. Bought new fitting. Undone old fitting and found 3 red wires all wired separate. 2 black wires wired together. New fitting has 3 areas to wire into and 30 year old fitting had four hence previous config. How to config wiring into new style fitting? House in rented put from previous experience this means 2 days off work as they never bring right equipment.

What's a pull light?

Can you describe what this is, also tell us EXACTLY which wires go where at the moment. Also describe the connections on the new fitting, whatever it is.

If you can send a photograph of the current wiring, even better.

If the OP is the tenant, then an electrician is needed as is the landlord's permission for this work to be carried out.
If the OP is the landlord, then an electrician is needed, as they are clueless and have a duty or care to the tenant.
If they are neither, they need to tell the tenant to contact the landlord and arrange for a competent electrician to be employed !
