I would be grateful for your thoughts.

I had a surveyor from a local heating firm round to measure up and gather requirements for a quote.

We got to talking about copper pipe vs plastic and he offered to quote me twice - once for copper and once for plastic pipe.

How much would would you expect the difference in cost to be?

What would be a fair difference?

If you're a plumber or heating engineer, what would you install in your own place?

I thank you! :D

Copper v Plastic

PIPE = Copper more expensive
Fittings = Plastic more expensive
Labour involved = Copper takes at least double the time
Looks = copper looks better

I would have plastic where not seen and copper where on show.

On a general small 1st fix the copper price would be maybe £400 more

I would always want copper!

Plastic is quicker to fit. Tube is cheaper but fittings cost more.

Thanks for your replies.

Another issue that was discussed during the survey is that I need to have the boiler flue vertical and vented through the roof - almost 3m above.

Is this going to increase the cost significantly? I understand a roofer will need to fit a slate piece, etc, but are the flue extensions as expensive as google suggests?

Cheers :D

i usualy price £50/m for the extension and extra labour. Most plumbers I know do there own roofing (thats if they are real plumbers and not gas engineers.... :rolleyes: )

Cheeky fooker :LOL:

Some of us are too big to be clambering over people's roofs. Just because you come from oop North and were so malnourished that you can hop around with gay abandon isn't my fault ;).

Ha ha thought you did roof work from the ground?

To be fair not many southerners do roof work as the chilly wind can chap their lips something rotten and unfortunately not many can afford the week of work to fully recover.

I would, but working at height regulations prevent it as my public liability only covers me for 15% a year - which is pretty much covered by walking to the van ;).

Still that's what subbies are for. Means I can sit in air conditioned comfort listening to Woman's Hour ;). :p

Roof flue will put around 250 /300 quid on price but depends what offer is on with the boiler some merchants give pack for either type flue for same price
Go for copper far better
in a existing domestic situation i really dont see plastic being that much quicker also copper goes into far tighter spaces under floorboards than plastic fittings ever could and its certainly not 400 quid of a difference
The cheaper plastic pipe is far outweighed by the price of fittings

Personally i would never dream of using a roofer but i am old school

First quote in. £100+VAT more for copper pipe.

£2,900

Vokera compact A 29kw
Vertical flue
8 radiator system
450 x 1800 k2
450 x 800 k2 x 2
450 x 500 k2 x 2
450 x 700 k2
600 x 500 k1
600 x 800 k2
5 year Parts and Labour Warranty

I guess the other quotes, should they ever arrive, will let me know if this is good value.

Any thoughts on this price?

That's about the norm price wise about here, one shift for two men, granted it maybe quite a long shift! It's been that way for years, there's no big money to be made in Central Heating in the central belt of Scotland.

I would've thought it'll be more than 100 quid for copper??!!!
