New Fan Assembly Needed - Ideal Elan 2 40F

Hi

I'd be grateful for some help please - I'm trying to help out a mate who hasn't got too much disposable income!

His Ideal Elan 2 40F boiler has stopped working - apparently the fan assembly is broken - part no. 131794

He has cover with British Gas but they say the part is out of stock.

Looking online, there are a few websites which state that the part is available at around £300 inc delivery.

Three questions - 1. is there a reliable place to buy this part from 2. can he recover the money from buying it from British Gas? and 3. is it worth repairing or trying to pull the money together for a like-for-like replacement at the quoted £1700 from a local fitter?

You havent read your BG contract, if the part is available from THEIR contacts then it is covered, you have no recourse I am afraid

Hi eBay have a lot of companies selling refurbished fans for like 45-50 then get a local gsr engineer to fit it for you

BG now check with 25 different suppliers before declaring a part obsolete.

You may find alot of online places dont actually have them instock dispite showing them on their store.
If you can source a brand new, genuine fan then BG would fit it and probably reimburse the cost.
They wont if its a pattern part or second hand/refurb

Why bother keeping this old relic going and paying british gas a monthly fee.
Cancel the homecare and get a boiler with a five year + warranty, the monies you save on paying for homecare will pay for the boiler over the 5 years.

Easiest to find three suppliers with a genuine part in stock and pass the info to BG and let them buy it to repair the boiler.

Faced with that evidence of the availability of the part they will have no good argument that the part is not available.

The engineer also gets a commission payment I you let BG give you a quote for a replacement boiler. Some are deflected from repairing the boiler by that payment which is a pity.

It is a rather old boiler though.

My experience with British Gas is that they often climb down in these situations, so my friend will go down that route.

I agree with the idea of getting a new boiler and stopping the BG cover though. My guess is he will go down this route in the Summer, having had time to get some proper quotes and work out whether to get a combi or stick with a conventional boiler.
