I would like to fit a device that, when the house is unoccupied, would detect any water leaks and turn off the water. My feeling is that nothing would detect a very slight leak but I would like something more serious to be detected. I would welcome any views as to how effective such devices are and any recommendations as to how, if at all, to go about choosing one.

What do you mean by unoccupied, if its long term, turning off the mains would be the answer.

I recall seeing a device at a home improvements show about 4 years ago but cannot remember the details. I think that it was said to work by being triggered if there was a steady but slight flow over, say, 15 minutes, the presumption being that most normal uses would either be for less time or for fluctuating demands (eg. watering the garden). I think that it was possible to, as it were, set the sensitivity for particular circumstances and it also had provision for manually turning off the water (using as a mains tap). Of course, such a device wouldn't stop every single drop of water leaking out but it would prevent catastrophic damage and would be easier for anyone to turn off the mains than a tap typically placed somewhere dark, not easily accessible and close to knuckle-scraping projections.

To make it worthwhile and practical I would have thought it would have to be situated near the internal stop cock and before any domestic outlets . i.e taps to cut off water supply, . or does one fit these to every water outlet in a property ?
