When we moved into our house we removed a neglected 14ft high Laurel Hedge. We have been working on the garden and are now ready to install a fence.

The front garden plot is on a corner and is a 60ft run. We want concrete gravel board and featheredge fencing.

I am aware of the fact that anything over 1m requires planning permission if it borders a public highway. But I don't want a 3ft fence as I think it may attract local youngsters (myself not too long ago) to perch on it - so I was thinking 1ft gravel board and 3ft panel to give us 4ft. I also don't want to go through the hassle of applying for it...

Our drive slopes down to the road level and the car is parked about 5ft above the road level so I will have a height advantage as I go to pull out.

Some others on the street have 3.5ft fence... 7ft fence...!!! and there are others - none of which have had PP.

What do you guys think? Shall I just crack on?

Go for it, what's the worse that could happen! The LA are unlikely to do anything beyond writing some crappy letters, it won't be in the public's interest for the LA to spend any money on enforcement.

I had to have pp for a 1.5m brick wall around my front garden. They even wanted a scale drawing which I done on graph paper and of course a cheque for £150.

I'm with Freddy, crack on!

You aren't the only person affected by an over-height fence.

Thanks for the replies everyone. I will probably just crack on then.

Hi ceres... I know I am not... I am also asking because I am conscious of children/others and ensuring I can see them. I am thinking of maybe altering the first panel to have a trellis section to allow better vision... Who else are you saying is affected?
