Hello. Im looking get a Nest smart thermostat to my Glow Worm 30cxi but after inspection of my current thermostat wiring, im in need of some help. I have two wires going to the current thermostat, labled L & Y1. (For some reason who ever fitted it has used twin & earth cable) this links to a voltage free connector as you can see in the pic. The L (Blue) goes to the Blue on the voltage free connector & the Y1 (Brown) goes to the pink. Now im guessing this is Switch Live & Call for heat wires?

Is nest compatible with my system with just these two or will i have to spur off of a few others?

Any advice would be great.

Thankyou

This is where the volt free link connects to...You can see the blue & pink wires along with 3 others on the plug. Black, Brown & Red

All you need to do is disconnect the old thermostat at or near the boiler and take those two 'volt-free' wires to terminals 2 & 3 in the nest heatlink.

Obviously the heatlink will also need Live and Neutral from the same switched mains supply as the boiler.

You definitely do NOT want any additional connections in the nest heatlink between the mains power wires and the volt-free connections, as this would apply only to 230V boiler demand systems and would damage your boiler.

Thankyou very much Jack. Thats a huge help & the answer i was hoping for!! :)

Hi, I know this is an old thread but I have the same issue, I got a nest and (in retrospect) rather foolishly paid for fitting.

However the fitter would not fit it due to telling me that the boiler needed modification to get a power supply from it.

My boiler is the glowworm cxi with a Drayton battery operated thermostat that has two wires (common and on?)

Am i correct that all I need to do would be to provide 240v power to the heatlink and connect the two wires that are currently connected to the Drayton to the 2nd and 3rd terminals?

I'm totally confused as to why the installer said I needed to mod the boiler when surely I can take the power from the root supply of the boiler (and that's what he should have done)?

You should claim back the fitting cost IMO. As you say if the boiler works fine with your battery powered thermostat it will certainly be happy with the Heatlink.
Usually best mounting the Heatlink close to the boiler where it can get it's mains from the boiler supply and then just a short run for the 2-wire control cable from terminals 2 & 3.

Was just contemplating installing one of these and wished these images were still available!

Could anybody reupload the photos showing the wiring configuration? I have the exact same boiler (30CXi) with a Drayton RTS1 thermostat mounted in the hallway. Is the installation different to a battery-operated one? Thanks.

Thread is over 5 years old, should start your own, forum rules. Yes battery ones can be different.
