Recommended screws for studs

Thanks, is that 10mm diameter?

And I thought for joining two pieces of wood you only want partially threaded screws so it pulls into the second piece of wood...

no its wire gauge no10 equivilant to around 5mm
the shanks will be partly un threaded they just use a standard picture regardless off size

you could use 4"nails as well :D

I have a drill and a hammer, I know which I prefer to use :)

So 100mm through 90mm of wood? I suppose if screwed at an angle it should be fine.

sorry i misunderstood i thought you wanted to butt up to end rather than face to face
go for 80mm or 3" if its 44 or 90mm and 3 1/2" iff its 46/47mm timber

when you said studs they are normally 2x4" sawn at 47x97 ish rather than more expensive planed timber or cls at 38x89mm

Al, take a look at his planned construction for a frame to mount his telly on, particularly the positions of his screws. I have a feeling the frame wont be secure if fixed as shown.

He is putting plywood across the 3 studs which will hold, but I don't see any point in putting the frame in.

The drawing was just an illustration of proposed "plans". It was just smashed together in PS to demonstrate visually for people to better understand my idea. The screw positions will not be as the drawing since I'm going for longer wood vertical studs (face/face) which will spread the load and not concentrate the load in small area on the center stud.

Getting some structural timber in B&Q 95/45mm 3.6m for £8ish, thats just little more than I need.

Ok perfect so 80mm by 5mm.

Pilot holes for these and how big?

if its more than 15mm from an edge or 20 from an end you dont need a pilot
otherwise 4mm drill on a 5mm/no10 screw

Great thanks! And what about 8mm coach screws/bolts same principle? 1mm less or can it be two (have a 6mm drill bit).

coach bolt/screw a different animal really wouldn't personally even think about them for this task
one 8mm coach bolt would support 60 kg in a solid brick wall or in a 6x6" gate post
what fixings do the the manufacturers off the bracket suggest you use ?
also what size are the holes in the bracket as that governs you maximum shaft size ?

The bracket came with 8mm (possibly 6mm) 50/60mm long bolts and washers for stud installation. The holes are more than 6mm for sure.
