I am going to be replacing the flat roof on my garage with a fiberglass one this summer and I want to install a roof light.

I already have a pilkington low-e self cleaning double glazed unit sat in the garage so I was hoping to use this, however I have no frame for it.

My plan was to make a timber frame to hold the unit about 6 inches above the roof of the garage on a slope pointing south. I can put a rebate in the frame to hold the glass unit but am unsure on how to weather seal it in conjunction with the new GRP roof.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

What's proposed here is a recipe.

A recipe for disaster!

They do say a Yorkshireman is a Scotsman with all the generosity squeezed out of him!

Yeah, buy a proprietary purpose made roof light and throw your DGU in the bin. Cobbling up a DGU and frame will end up in leaky misery.

But where is the fun in that! It's only the garage and I like to fettle :D

Could I fit the unit into to two edge glazing bars, flash the top and let the bottom run over?

Even in the winter when its freezing cold and piddling it down with rain and all your stuff in the garage is getting wet?

How long do you want this to last? Are you planning on moving anytime soon?
