Ive had an experince with a rogue builder and just wanted some advice

I had problems with a heater half heating up and hot water coming and going. I have a combi boiler and he ‘fixed’ it six months ago and he said it would be fine for at least a few years, six months later same problem and after trying numerous times he finally came to check it out and in a couple of minutes he just said change the boiler and he’s trying to blame me for it.

In the end it was just something simple, getting the air out of heaters – something another builder came and that was the first thing they did

So my questions are:

How long does it take to see if the heat exchanger is faulty?

When would the heating AND water fail you? As far as i know they would be two seperate issues unless theres the pressure i had or a leak somewhere, is there another way where both would occur?

Any other suggestions on how I can prove this?

Unfortunately your two questions don't make enough sense to be able to answer. Builders aren't competent to install or maintain boilers. You need a heating engineer.

Sorry, he was gas safety registered and gave me a certificate too.

If i explain properly what i mean is the heaters were half heating up and hot water was coming and going at the same time, what kind of faults are we looking at for that? When both would specifically occur at the same time?

Is this a property that you rent out?

Otherwise why did you need a certificate?

Unfortunately you are still not explaining the fault clearly.

Agile - yeah its a property I rent out

the problem i was having was the heaters in all the rooms were half heating up, and the hot water was coming and going. This person done a power flush and replaced the heat exchanger. The power flush i was told was for the heating, the heat exchanger was for the water.

Six months later I had the exact same problem, and he is saying i should have replaced the boiler - whereas he told me to do this stuff, i am now researching online and see power flush are not neccessary in these situations.

I think the thing i am trying to say is, its a bit coincidental that the same problem was there six months down the line - ie hot water coming and going and the heaters half heating up - so my question really is when would BOTH of these occur? What kind of faults would the boiler have to have for this? Ive read online that it could be air pressure (which is what I did have) or a leak in the pipes - is there anything else?

What boiler is it?
How old is the boiler?
Do you get it regularly serviced?
Have you had any other boiler engineer come and have a look, if you are concerned that the current boiler engineer is 'rogue'?

So you are saying your hot water is sometimes hot and sometimes warm?
You are saying that your radiators are not warming up very well?
Are they cold at the top or the bottom?
Have you checked the pipework for leaks?
Is the flow pipework to the rads hot?
Have you bled all the rads for air?
Did he replace the heat exchanger or clean it?

Hi - The boiler is a biasi riva

It is approx 15 years old

It has been serviced regulalrly

Yes - another boiler engineer came - all he did was take the air out of the radiators and the problem was solved - so i am having no problem now but i am asking the questions in the opening post to get a clear idea of taking action against the rogue person

The exact problems were - heating wise the bottom half of the heaters were cold, top half were warm

Water - this would be cold, sometimes hot

Both are working now since getting the air out of the radiators - but when else would the problems I had occur? I see you have said pipes leaking - which i found online too - any other instances?

Are you sure the rads were hot at the top?

The sign of air in a rad is cold at the top!

Why dont you explain at the beginning what your motives are?

Or you could pay me to visit and report on what I find!
